Title: The New Circle
Fandoms: Smallville/Secret Circle
Characters: Chloe Sullivan, Whitney Fordman, Greg Arkin, Cassie Blake, Diana Meade, Mikhail Balcoin, Lucas Dunleavy, Faye Chamberlain, Byron Moore...
Rating: T
Disclaimer: Don't own
Summary: Chloe Sullivan had a normal-ish life before the circle and John Blackwell turned her life upside down and gave new meaning to the unexplained weirdness that goes on in Smallville. Now life's a witch, she's a part of a circle she's not too sure she wants to be bound to, and not only do they have to worry about Witch-Hunters, but unknowingly to them another circle is on the hunt too.

The girl licked her lips. "My dad – Gabe – he wasn't my biological father."

Van's eyes widened.

"My biological father was John Balcoin. Remember that freak incident where half of Smallville nearly burnt up? That was him. He wanted to kill every witch that didn't have Balcoin blood in them or weren't allied with us." Chloe turned her gaze ahead of them. "But the thing is, magically, I have two dads and a hint of a mother."

Van blinked. "What?"

"I warned you that it was complicated," she mumbled before taking in a deep breath. "The guy that did this? The attack? He's also my father, magically at least. His magic was what mixed with John's magic when I was born, not my mother's. And apparently that's as valid as blood in the magical community. Also, I haven't told anyone this bit yet, you're the first to find out." She turned her greens on Van. "He's a Dragon."

Van stared at her for a couple of minutes. "As in, evil or very dominant?"

"As in the mythological creature," Chloe corrected. "He is originally from another dimension, and is a Royal, so he has the ability to shapeshift into any form he wants to, even human."

Van continued to eye her. "So are you…?"

"No." She shook her head before pausing, worrying her bottom lip. "Well, half. I-I can make my eyes go reptile and I have – scales."

"No way." Van's eyes widened as he turned towards her. "Are you serious? Can you do that now?"

"Not sure, I'm actually really wiped out after last night," Chloe admitted, turning to face him as well, trying to force the shift, and yet the disappointment on Van's face proved that nothing had happened. "Sorry, I'm just really beat."

"So…" Van cleared his throat, thoughtfully. "Not a wolf shifter, a lizard shifter."

"I don't turn into a lizard." She glared at him for that one. "I just get some silver scales across my cheekbones. That's as far as my 'shifting' goes."

"They're silver? Cool." Van grinned brightly. "As soon as your mojo is recharged, you have got to show me them!"

Chloe smiled, shaking her head. "At least one of us is psyched about this. I'm more terrified than anything, especially considering I have things crawling out of my throat. That's – that's not a pleasant experience."

Van's smile melted as he looked at her. "I really don't know anything about you, huh?"

"I don't really know anything about me. It's what makes everything so much worse than it has to be." Chloe shrugged, tired. "Did you meet Zatanna last night?"

He paused for a moment before nodding. "Big breasted. Gray eyed."

She rolled her eyes at the big breasted comment. "She was trapped in the Dragon's home dimension since she was a child and to make sure that she got out, while I was unconscious, she bound herself by blood to me to be my servant." Chloe took in a deep breath, not sure how she felt about that. She could understand the reasons the girl had had for why she'd done what she'd done, but still Chloe had to deal with the possibly permanent consequences. "I'm hoping she'll be able to give me some answers."

"Servant," Van echoed.

"Yeah." Chloe made a face. "I found this out when one of the Dragons told me." She turned her gaze to him. "Thing is, I wouldn't have left her behind. She didn't need to go to those extremes and I don't know if something like that can be undone."

"I'm not witch, but blood magic sounds pretty permanent." Van's gaze went to the floor. "What do you plan on doing with her?"

"Get as much information out of her as possible, then find out what she wants to do and do my best to help her do it," Chloe replied. "I doubt she'll want to stick around; it's indirectly my fault that she was trapped there and I wouldn't blame her for wanting to be as far away from me as she could get. So I figured I could give her more than enough money to find somewhere to settle down, to study for a while, and discover what she wants to do with her life."

Van smiled at the floor before turning his eyes on her. "So you'll give up the slave."

She glared at him. "It's not like I bound her, okay?"

"I know, I know, it's just…" Van cleared his throat, lowering his gaze once more. "It's comforting for me to hear that. Makes me feel like, despite all this magic bullshit, I might know you somewhat after all."

Chloe eyed him in silence before her gaze lowered to the ground. "Even though you're a host, I would never force you to do anything – last night, I was – you were all in danger-"

"I know." He shook his head. "It unnerves the hell out of me and I am not comfortable with this, but I know."

Hearing rapid footsteps, Chloe looked up to see Mr Fordman, the girl's eyes widening as she hurriedly stood. "Mr Fordman! Whitney's-"

"Not looking for him, looking for you." Mr Fordman eyed her before clearing his throat, straightening. "We wanted to let you sleep as long as you could, but there's more arriving now. You need to come."

Chloe sent a look to Van before going to Mr Fordman, following him as the man led her away, worried that Rao was sending more troops to attack them once more. "What are you talking about?"

"The first ones started arriving early in the morning," Mr Fordman announced, his movements brusque as he walked. "At first there were only a couple, small groups of maybe two or three, but now more and more are arriving and they're all asking for you. They are all here because of you."

"Who are all here?" Chloe pressed, that suspicion hard and cold in her stomach, scared because, with how worn out her magic was at this moment, she doubted she could really put up any sort of a fight.

He stopped and looked at her. "Refugees."

"Refugees?" Chloe blinked, all her fear turning into confusion.

"Survivors of the attacks." Mr Fordman nodded, face grim. "The magical community was dealt a harsh blow last night, Chloe. It was nearly destroyed, and people know that this was the only place that withstood his attack. We have refugees from all over the States arriving at the strike of each hour. They trickle in in small groups, but they're accumulating and they're all waiting to see you." He must have been able to see the confusion mounting on her face because he sighed. "Last night you didn't just protect this town from Rao's attack, Chloe. By doing so, by proving your ability to do so, you've declared war on him."

"I've done what?" She could feel all color draining from her face.

"If you want to protect your family, it would come to that anyway," Mr Fordman told her bluntly. "Rao Darkseid has issued a war on the magical community and Smallville is the last stronghold, with the House of Balcoin as the only thing that stands in his way. These people understand this, and those who do not plan on allying with him will come to you for alliance and protection." He hesitated before clapping her on the shoulder. "If you can handle your siblings, you can handle these people."

Van snickered behind her.

Chloe took in a deep breath before nodding, eyeing Mr Fordman. "Lead the way."

Granny Goodness and Desaad stood outside the chambers, hearing the roars of agony, the sound of scales falling, of bones cracking, coming from within.

The two most faithful shared a small smile before returning their gazes ahead of them as they continued their watch over the door.

Chloe stopped to use the bathroom before going downstairs, brushing her teeth and trying to straighten her hair somewhat, able to do nothing about her ashen and bruised skin. She looked like she'd been through hell, the girl in her not too happy about people seeing her like this, but she pushed those feelings away and descended down the stairs, finding Mr and Mrs Kent, Mrs Arkin, Nell, Mrs McNulty, Mrs Fordman, the Mayor, and the General there with a few people she didn't recognize.

The people rose as she descended, all of them injured in some way, some of them badly enough that she couldn't understand what they were doing here and not at a hospital. She frowned, coming closer, staring at the group huddled in her living room, Van and Mr Fordman descending the stairs behind her.

"I was told you are survivors of the attacks on the other Five." Chloe finally broke the silence, pulling a blonde strand out of her face and behind her ear.

A handsome dark skinned boy with golden eyes stepped forwards with an obvious limp, his leg bandaged and an arm around his side. "My name is Victor Stone." He took in a deep breath, pain filtering through his features before he blanked his expression as he raised a single palm to show the symbol there. "Miranda Wylt was my mother."

Miranda Wylt, said to be a descendant of Merlin. She was the woman from the banquet with grey streaks through her black locks, whose true face had been a fierce looking baboon with fiery red eyes named Charlie.

"Was." Chloe picked up on that word.

Victor gulped, his gaze hardening. "I'm the only Wylt who survived the attack on our Clan. I managed to escape, but the rest of my family and friends did not." He took in a deep breath. "I thought I was the only one left until I heard the broadcast."

"Same with me," another older boy around Victor's age announced, this one surfer-blonde with blue eyes. "When I heard that Smallville still stood, I had to come." His skin was tanned from days under the sun, and yet ashen from pain as he drew closer. "My brother, is he alive?"

Chloe's eyes widened. "What Clan are you?"

"Tentagel," he whispered, raising his palm to show the proof on his skin. "I'm AC." He drew closer. "My brother Adam, is he still alive?"

Chloe nodded, eyes filling with tears which she brushed away frantically, nodding as she composed herself. "He's alive."

AC closed his eyes in relief.

Chloe turned to Van. 'Go wake Adam up and tell him to come here immediately.'

Van blinked, bringing a hand to his head. 'Did you just-?'

Chloe's eyes widened. 'You did too.'

Van's eyes widened. 'I did... I am...' He turned slowly and moved up the stairs, knocking the heel of his palm into his head a couple of times.

Chloe watched him go before returning her attention to the boys and the small group behind them. "So are any of you a Sigan or a Le Fay by any chance?"

The boys shared a look before Victor shook his head. "No. The Sigans and the Le Fays were wiped out completely. They don't have any survivors."

"These are the few people faithful to our clans who managed to escape with us," AC clarified.

"I see..." Chloe eyed the group before turning to Mrs Kent and Mrs Fordman. "Could you ladies take them to the kitchen and get them something to eat? They look hungry."

The women, seeing it for what it was, took the small group away, leaving Chloe with Victor and AC.

The blonde turned to them. "Le Fay might have been wiped out, but it has one survivor at least. Same goes for Sigan. I know for a fact that Le Fay has a direct blood relation who has survived. That means that Sigan has one as well and he or she is out there somewhere, probably in need of help."

"You can't know that for sure," Victor countered.

"Which Le Fay?" AC made a face.

"Yes, I can. You mightn't know this, but if one of the Houses fell completely, magic as we know it would go with it." Chloe could see the shock on the boys' faces before she turned to AC. "Janus Le Fay had a niece, Zatanna Zatara. She's survived."

"She's dead." AC frowned, sharing a confused look with Victor. "Everyone knows that John Zatara, his wife, and their daughter died in an accident when the girl was two years old."

"That's what Janus wanted you to believe," Chloe responded. "They were very much alive. She is very much alive."

Victor and AC shared another look before taking in deep breaths.

"AC?" Adam whispered.

AC looked up. "Adam."

The brothers rushed to hug each other tightly.

Chloe noticed Victor flinching in pain, the girl moving towards him in worry. "You need to be seen by a Doctor."

"I'm fine." He looked away. "I'm alive; that's more than anyone else I know or love can say."

She took in a deep breath as she rested her hand on his arm. "I still want you to get your injuries looked at."

He turned his golden eyes on her before nodding.

"Thank you."

The General cleared his throat. "We've brought in Witch Doctors and mortal ones for those who aren't too gravely wounded and refuse to leave to go to Metropolis for treatment."

Chloe turned from Victor towards her uncle at that. "People are refusing to leave for medical treatment?"

"People feel safer here," Mr Kent explained. "The Six might have been specifically targeted last night but they were not the only ones targeted. Many other places were hit." He took in a deep breath. "Smallville's the only place still standing."

She eyed Mr Kent before turning to the Mayor. "How are the people?"

"Five thousand are dead, around fifty critically injured," he whispered, the toll of the night showing on his face. "It might seem like an insignificant amount given our population is 45,001... or it was... but those were five thousand good people."

"I'm very sorry." Chloe took in a deep breath. "I want you to talk to the townspeople and let them know that I'm willing to buy their houses and land at whatever the price was before the damage they received last night." She ignored the way the man jerked his gaze up to her. "It's only going to get more dangerous around here and they deserve to be able to relocate with their money's worth to start a life somewhere safer."

"Safer?" The Mayor made a face as he came closer. "Chloe, you haven't been watching the news. There are five craters out there. Craters. How is out there any safer than here?"

"Because the person behind those craters is going to come back after Smallville," Chloe pressed, surprised she was getting a fight out of the man. She had been sure he and the rest of the people would jump at the idea. "You aren't witches. This isn't your fight."

"So it was the fight of every civilian in Hub City?" The Mayor pressed. "What about Grandville?"

"What about Hub City and Grandville?" Chloe frowned, not understanding what those towns had to do with anything. "They're not witch towns."

"They're not towns." The General sighed. "Not anymore."

"What?" Chloe turned towards her uncle in horror.

"They're gone." Nell shook her head. "Rao's men decimated the population; left no one alive, not even the animals."

"They're not the only towns like that. Towns and villages all across the globe have been similarly hit," Mrs Arkin whispered, sitting on the couch next to Mrs McNulty, the two mortals still very new to everything and were visibly shaken. "BBC News kept calling it the worst act of global terror to have ever been committed. They kept wondering why no one had stepped up to take the credit for the attacks, tried to understand the reasoning behind it."

"They'd never believe it," Mrs McNulty whispered. "I still don't believe it."

"Phil wants to come and talk to you about what the Smallville Ledger should run as the cover story," The Mayor announced, eyes on Chloe, referring to Philip Mason, the Chief Editor of the local newspaper. "He's waiting outside with the vultures – I mean the press." He took in a deep breath. "No one knows what to tell them. Even KROC is offline with the excuse that the radio station is experiencing problems... And that reminds me that Ned's outside with Phil as well. We have to make sure the story we tell is the same." He shook his head. "Already our silence is causing suspicion, but we just don't know what to tell the press."

Why did they assume she did?

Chloe looked up at the Mayor, at everyone else in the room looking at her, fighting the seed of panic taking root in her stomach as she nodded and took in a deep breath. "Bring them into the den. I'll see them there."

Ohh it's Victor and AC!!!!! And AC is Adam's brother!!
Just wondering if my precious Bart will make an appearance??

"So…" Van cleared his throat, thoughtfully. "Not a wolf shifter, a lizard shifter."

Lol. Oh Van!

Wow that's so much destruction that Rao committed I wonder what they are going to say to the press..

Can't wait for more.

26th-Sep-2013 01:57 am (UTC)
Yes, Victor and AC have finally made their appearance in this story.

And Van---at least he got to have a shifter of *some* kind. It will make up for the disappointment of her not being a werewolf.

24th-Sep-2013 07:42 am (UTC)
she's just a kid and all the adults look at her for help, poor chloe

Yes, but like Voltaire said: "With great power comes great responsibility".

Rao definitely is not finished with them!

I know right?!?!?! It's insane!!!!
24th-Sep-2013 09:11 am (UTC)
I'm so glad Adam isn't alone... But his brother is AC?!?! Wow, that's going to be an... interesting dynamic. Also, can I mention that even if it seems 100% familial at the moment, I wouldn't mind a little Chloe/Adam?

That said, looking forward to more Chlod. Also, looking forward to... everything else. Chloe dealing with the press and Rao and her dragonyness like the BAMF she is, particularly!

Thanks for the update (just in time for my return from holidays) and PPMS!
26th-Sep-2013 02:01 am (UTC)
Yes, it is! Especially for poor Chloe, considering how different AC and Adam are!

There will definitely be more Chlod in the future. Chloe won't be dealing with the press herself, she'll be in the background, but she *will* have some public speaking in the future *le gasp* which she wont like!

I'm so glad one of Adam's brothers survived and it's AC. Should have guessed really what with the Tentagel's obsession with A's. I'm just so glad he didn't lose he's whole family especially because there only needs to be one from each house left.

They've got to find the Sigan(s) before Rao does. I wonder if anymore Luthors made it.

PS Love the new banner. The colours look great and Scaley Chloe looks awesome.

She did say that EVERY MAJOR Luthor survive, it's just that Julian is an idiot for EVEN THINKING Lex and Lionel didn't make it! Pathetic really, of him.
26th-Sep-2013 02:02 am (UTC)
@tone_death

Yes, AC was definitely planned (and hinted vaguely) because of the A obsession. lol. I couldn't do that to Adam. I love him too much.

Thanks! The scales were a pain! So I'm glad you like!
24th-Sep-2013 04:59 pm (UTC)
Looking at your new banner, I mistook Mihael for Adam at first. I never realized how much trent ford and ian somerhalder look alike! O.O
26th-Sep-2013 02:03 am (UTC)
You know.... now that you mention it... kinda... slightly....
27th-Sep-2013 07:00 pm (UTC)
More than slightly for me. Also, please excuse my extremely bad spelling/typo of Mikhail. I must have been half asleep when I wrote that, lol
24th-Sep-2013 09:12 pm (UTC) - I have to say
Chloe is TAKING on TOO MUCH..I mean, to just BUY the property/house from EVERYONE is just NOT logical and it shouldn't BE Chloe's job to do so..It's not right for her to TAKE CARE OF THE WHOLE FREAKING TOWN!

She's not even HEALED yet and THEY'RE/lois and co or the muggle adults are using her. I don't like that.

26th-Sep-2013 02:04 am (UTC) - Re: I have to say
Well, to be honest her reasons for wanting to do that weren't all selfless, which will be touched on in a later chapter.
25th-Sep-2013 10:13 pm (UTC)
Yes!! It took me almost two weeks but I'm finally caught up, and I'm so glad because this fic is amazeballs! Just when I think I have everything figured out, you throw in a total curveball and change everything and it is awesome. I can not wait to see what happens next and I'm totally crossing my fingers that Whitney and Chloe end up together.
26th-Sep-2013 02:09 am (UTC)
Welcome to chapter 90! Glad you're liking it! And may the curveballs ever keep you guessing ;P
