Summary: Chloe Sullivan had a normal-ish life before the circle and John Blackwell turned her life upside down and gave new meaning to the unexplained weirdness that goes on in Smallville. Now life's a witch, she's a part of a circle she's not too sure she wants to be bound to, and not only do they have to worry about Witch-Hunters, but unknowingly to them another circle is on the hunt too.

The walls shook and the floors rose, sealing Cassie and Mikhail inside a small chamber with no way in or out.

Cassie looked around her, eyes wide. "What just happened? Why did the exits just seal up like that on us for no good reason?"

Mikhail frowned. "I don't know, but I don't like it."

Chloe looked around her in the darkness, alone and vulnerable, unable to make out anything and yet knowing that she wasn't alone. She twirled slowly, the tunnels having closed up and separated her from Zod, things having moved around so quickly that she wasn't even sure he was on the other side of the wall anymore, and that made her wary. For the first time, she was truly all alone and powerless in a cave system that wasn't friendly. She was alone in the dark, like in some sort of horror movie, and whenever things like this happened on the big screen it never ended well for the blonde, never.

Something trailed audibly on the floor around her.

Chloe gasped as she twirled around to face the sound, green eyes narrowed as she tried to shift them reptilian and yet she was powerless and hated it.

Something was definitely in there with her, and there was nothing she could do to defend herself.

Her palm began to burn, drawing her attention downwards. Chloe raised it to see the Balcoin symbol burning brightly, and then her other palm burnt as well and she raised that, both symbols glowing in the darkness, giving away her position and yet giving her a bit of hope that maybe her magic wasn't completely dead.

Suddenly she was choking, Chloe bringing her hands to her neck as she gasped in desperately for breath.

"You know, Cassie and I were stuck in something similar to this when John tried killing every witch who didn't have Balcoin blood in them." Diana eyed the sigils on the ground. "It's obviously much more potent shield work, but she and I were able to get through that barrier working together with both of our dark magics activated." She took in a deep breath as she turned to Whitney. "It's why Cassie tried to kill me, to activate my dark magic so we could get loose."

Whitney eyed her with a raised eyebrow. "I don't have Balcoin dark magic."

"No," Diana agreed with a nod. "But you're Chloe's Sanguine, and you go into that frenzy thing, right? You mightn't be Balcoin or Dragon but you're nothing to scoff at, Whitney. I'm sure, if we work together, we can get past this just like Cassie and I got past John's barrier."

Whitney took in a deep breath. "We are both members of her Circle."

"The Matriarch Circle," Diana reminded as she reached her hand out. "We can do this."

Whitney nodded. "We don't have a choice." He moved to put his hand in hers when suddenly his forehead flashed, revealing the Omega symbol there, the Sanguine and winged serpent design on his palm also lighting up as he brought his hands to his throat. "I can't breathe."

"What?" Diana's eyes widened in horror as she stepped in closer.

"I can't…" He couldn't finish due to lack of oxygen, the Sanguine's face red as he collapsed to his knees, desperate and loud in his attempts to suck in air. The Omega symbol on his forehead flashed angrily.

Diana stared at it, her lips parting. "You're claimed for her Darkseid Circle, Whitney."

Whitney couldn't speak as he crumbled to the floor and gasped desperately for air.

"Nonononononononono!" Diana looked around her, scared and confused and out of ideas. "Stop it!" She gazed up at the cave ceiling desperately. "You're killing him!"

"You only brought one of those claimed to that side with you, despite the fact that I sense many bound to that magic," a voice declared in the shadows. "You knew they would be in danger, and so you chose to leave them behind despite the fact that it would leave you vulnerable." There was a pause. "I must admit, I am intrigued, I had not expected that. Why bring him when you did not see fit to bring the rest? Why put his life at risk when you would not do so with the others? Do you care so little about his well-being?"

"P-please…" Chloe gulped hard against the magic tightening around her neck. "Don't hurt him."

"He's merely unconscious… for now." The voice drew nearer. "Whether he, or anyone else who entered these Caves, live or not will depend solely on you."

Chloe nodded, knowing that the person speaking could see her.

"Good." The power over her ended, allowing her to breathe. "I am sure you do not care either way, but I do not care for what I am doing. I just want you to know that I take no joy in what I am doing. There is no personal satisfaction in this. What I do, I do for the good of humanity, just as I always have." There was another pause. "No matter how great the personal cost."

Chloe stared in the direction of the voice, her hand on her throat as she took in greedy breaths of air. "Who are you?"

"You have a right to know," the person declared as orbs arose from the cave floor everywhere to reveal a beautiful woman in her twenties with long black hair and brown eyes.

Chloe recognized that face, her eyes widening in shock. "I know you. You're Vika Balcoin."

The woman nodded silently as she stood in a long purple dress, a regal sight. "You wear my necklace."

Chloe's hand went to the pendant instinctively. "You're my ancestor."

The woman flinched and looked away. "It is what makes what I have to do so much harder, but you must understand that what I do, I have to do."

Chloe's eyes narrowed as she stared at the woman who couldn't be older than twenty eight. "What are you talking about? And how are you doing this? Are you a ghost? Or an Echo?" And yet she didn't seem like an Echo. She was much more aware of herself as an individual than John's Echo in the Crystal Cave, so Chloe was going for ghost.

Vika Balcoin moved towards her. "If I could have stopped it myself, I would have. This is my fault, I unleashed him into this world." Pain flashed over her features as she looked away. "But he was not always the way he is now. Believe me or not, but there was a time in which he loved, and was kind." She took in a deep breath before her brown eyes turned to Chloe. "But that time has long passed, and I knew that locking him away in his dimension would not be enough, that he would find a way back here now that his magic was a seed that had taken root and grew in this dimsension. It was only a matter of time before there was a harvest, and I could feel that harvest when it took place." Tears filled her eyes as Vika brought her hands to her heart. "All of those innocent lives were culled down before their time and perished because of me, because I was a foolish and selfish child."

"You couldn't have known what would happen." Chloe stared at the woman she'd found herself so fascinated with from the moment she'd first found out about her existence.

"I should have known that if you make a deal that seems too good to be true, it must be. There will always be consequences for your acts." Vika Balcoin, or Vika Darkseid even, raised her chin as she eyed the girl. "Because we accepted Rao's offer, he was able to cross into our dimension, was able to get his foothold in our world. Sending him back, correcting the mistake I had made, cost me the life of my innocentchild." The woman closed her eyes for a moment and took in a deep breath before she opened those eyes once more, her hand on her flat stomach in an almost unconscious movement. "And continuing to try and rectify my mistake continues to cost the life of innocents. It burns me." Her voice trembled. "I hate it."

A cold chill raced down Chloe's spine. "Before, when you said I had to understand that what you were going to do was something you had to do, but didn't want to – what did you mean?"

Vika Balcoin stared at her in silence before she took in a deep breath and steeled her expression. "I am going to kill you."

Walls slid up from the floor around them once they'd entered the chamber, but while that worried Adam, it wasn't his main concern. The symbols on the walls were, as were the way they affected Jason, who'd collapsed on the ground, groaning, his veins visibly pulsating in his body.

"We've got to get out of here!" And yet whenever Adam used magic on the walls, they only seemed to intensify the strength of the symbols and make whatever pain Jason was going through worsen, so he was forced to stop and back away, a feeling of cold dread creeping down his spine.

-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-

"Why are you going to kill me?" Chloe met her ancestor's gaze head on, refusing to back down despite the fact that she knew she didn't have a chance. Not only didn't she have any working magic at the moment (despite the glowing palms she couldn't conjure up any magic no matter how hard she tried), but she was deep within the Genesis Caves, which had been created by, and were under the complete control of, Vika Balcoin, who, as the Original Balcoin witch, had so much more power than Chloe anyway, that even if the blonde had had her magic, it wouldn't have mattered. "You don't even know me. So what could I have ever done that would deserve for you to kill me? You don't even know why I'm here."

"Because I have to stop him, to stop his plans, and a part of stopping those plans is by ending his bloodline here in our dimension." Vika stepped closer, gaze on Chloe. "I must undo what I did all those years ago, I have to remove the blight he cast on this dimension before he destroys it, as I have been doing, working against my own kind, each and every one who thought he was the one prophesied to be the one whom the Great Winged Serpent would rise again through." She tilted her head to the side, her long black locks blowing in the breeze that ran through the tunnels within the cave. "If there was another way in which there was not a chance of him winning, I would accept it, but this is the only one. If you had been born a son, it would not have come to this, but the moment your sex was determined to be that of a girl, your death was assured."

"Because only females give birth to the darkness?" Chloe asked softly.

Vika's eyes widened and went slightly golden. "You know then."

"What is this darkness?" Chloe wanted to know. "Why is it so important? It's obviously not hatchlings."

Vika was silent.

Chloe narrowed her eyes. "You're going to kill me, right? Then what do you care if I know or not? Tell me the reason why I have to die because of a mistake you made! You owe me that much at least!"

Vika flinched and looked away, pain visible on her features. "I owe you much more, but you're right, I can at least give you that." Those eyes turned towards Chloe, emotion in them. "Would you say that you can escape into fantasy when life is at its hardest?"

Chloe's eyes widened, the Legend of the Seeker incident rearing its head immediately in her mind.

"I see, it is already active," Vika whispered.

"That's the darkness?" Chloe frowned in confusion as she took a step forwards. "I don't understand. What is the darkness?"

"Chaos." Vika stepped forwards as well. "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep… that is the Christian creation myth, but it is far from the only one that begins with life emerging out of darkness. In fact, Fifth-century Orphic cosmogony had a "Womb of Darkness" in which the Wind laid a Cosmic Egg from which the god Eros was hatched, and this set the universe in motion."

Chloe narrowed her eyes at the fact that Vika would know something like that. "You make it sound like I can start a whole new dimension, and I can't."

"No, you can't." Vika shook her head in agreement. "But with it, you can alter things enough to make it so that we lose this world and all that makes it ours." Her ancestor's eyes narrowed. "You are our ruin."

Chloe drew back.

Vika sighed as she looked away. "In Greek myth, particularly Orphic thought, Phanes is the golden winged Primordial Being who was hatched from the shining silver Cosmic Egg that was the source of the universe. Called Protogonos (First-Born) and Eros (Love) — being the seed of gods and men — Phanes means "Manifestor" or "Revealer," and is related to the Greek words 'light' and 'to shine forth.'" She paused and shook her head, a sad look in her eyes. "An ancient Orphic hymn addresses this being thus: "Ineffable, hidden, brilliant scion, whose motion is whirring, you scattered the dark mist that lay before your eyes and, flapping your wings, you whirled about, and through this world you brought pure light."

Chloe didn't know what to say, didn't know if it would make any difference, merely stared at the woman.

"So you see, you are Protogonos." Vika took in a stuttered breath. "You are the Firstborn daughter, able to Enthrall-"

Chloe's eyes widened. "How do you know that?"

"I know it is a lot to ask from you, and it is horribly unfair, but I am asking for you to be that brilliant scion, whose motion is whirring, who scatters the dark mist and brings pure light." Vika reached out and grabbed Chloe's hands in hers as she stared into her greens eyes. "I do not know you, and his magic corrupts half of your soul, and my descendants have further corrupted my bloodline to the point that I cannot even recognize the magic they hold in their bodies." Her grip on Chloe's hands tightened yet not painfully. "But I ask you, I beg, that you do not fight what I must do."

Chloe stared into the eyes of the petite woman, her voice soft as it cracked in shock. "You're asking me not to fight back when you try to kill me."

"Yes." Vika nodded as she took in another stuttered breath before letting it out past her lips. "Please, make it a willing sacrifice, not a murder."

"How will me dying help?" Chloe asked, so confused and lost and scared. "I'm the only one who was able to stop him last time."

"That's what he wants you to think," another voice announced from behind her.

Chloe closed her eyes against the emotion she felt at the sound of that voice, and it was only when she was sure she wasn't going to cry that the blonde opened her eyes and turned her head to face the newcomer bathed in shadows. "You knew all along, didn't you?"

"I'm sorry," Moira Sullivan whispered, eyes suspiciously moist and yet determined. "If there was any other way… but Vika's right. There isn't any other way. We all have to make sacrifices."

Chloe gave a dark laugh, barely able to keep the tears at bay as she stared at her mother. "It's funny how the people who keep saying that are the ones who want me to make the sacrifice."

"I am sorry, Chloe," Vika's voice wavered as she reached out and wiped at a tear the blonde hadn't realized she'd shed, the dark haired woman shedding one herself. "I am so sorry."

The blonde lowered her head, knowing that there was no way she was going to get out of here alive, not with both Vika and her mother working together, and her without any magic on her side. "Just – promise me that my friends will make it out of here safely. All of them. Even the whole Dragon."

"I will not touch them." Vika nodded.

Suddenly, the walls began to shake violently, a snarl vicious and menacing as it echoed all around them.

He was on the other side of the wall.

"You have to do it now." Moira looked up, her eyes wide as she went to a table Chloe hadn't noticed and grabbed something before she headed back towards them. "This commotion will wake Lucas up, I only just knocked him unconscious."

Vika took the object from Moira, unsheathing it to reveal a dagger.

Chloe's eyes widened, not only because it was a dagger, but because it was the exact same dagger she'd seen formed in the shadows that day in the courtyard.

"This is a special weapon." Vika's finger trailed down the dull edge of the blade. "The one who dies by a wound inflicted by it ceases to exist, and time changes, erases that person, changes events so that they were never born." She looked up at Chloe. "I tried using it on myself, but it wouldn't work due to my… circumstances. It has to be you. The Secondborn is a boy. When you die by this blade, time will change, he'll become the Firstborn, and the plan will work."

Chloe stared at the blade as rocks and pebbles and dust fell around them at Zod's attack. "Are you going to continue trying to explain away your guilt, or are you to get it over with and kill me already?"

The guilt flashed darker on Vika's face as she looked away. "When you die by this blade, your friends and family will never have come to these caves. They will be safe."

Moira stepped forwards. "Chloe, I-"

"Don't talk to me." Chloe closed her eyes. "I mightn't be unborn yet, but you're not my mother anymore." Her eyes opened and rested on Vika's. "You're making a big mistake."

Vika took in a deep breath. "I pray to the gods, for the both of our souls, that you are wrong."

And with that, she plunged the knife into Chloe Sullivan's heart.

So I've been pondering, well crying and cursing at you when I had a thought that maybe all of this is a test. And hoping a little that Moira isn't as horrible as I think she is, especially cause Chloe deserves an awesome mom that won't lead her to her death.

Moira!!! Seriously she's been hanging out with crazy Vika for all these years and plotting to kill Chloe.

Definitely a mistake. Do we get to see how crappy the world-without-Chloe is before they fix it?

I can not believe you left it there!!!!! That is so mean! Now that I have that out of the way I can tell you that this was awesome. Please tell me that Chloe gets to punch Moira in the face when this is all over.
