Summary: Chloe Sullivan had a normal-ish life before the circle and John Blackwell turned her life upside down and gave new meaning to the unexplained weirdness that goes on in Smallville. Now life's a witch, she's a part of a circle she's not too sure she wants to be bound to, and not only do they have to worry about Witch-Hunters, but unknowingly to them another circle is on the hunt too.

They'd followed the shadow of the Tree of Life within Chloe and it'd led them towards the cave, just like the spell said it would, and they hadn't had to go deep into the cave before they found what they'd been searching for this whole time-for the reason why they'd made this journey. She'd been able to sense it the moment they'd entered the cave, and yet hadn't been able to see it until the creature made itself known, appearing in front of them, hissing.

Chloe's eyes widened as she stared at the Avatar, remembering seeing it, or at least a version of it, in Crouch's End. This version was different though, much different, as if the Avatar she'd seen in Crouch End had been a simplified version of the creature before them.

"The Great Balcoin Serpent," Mikhail whispered in awe.

Chloe sent him a curious look.

Pete raised an eyebrow.

Byron cleared his throat. "I'm ready."

Reminded as to why they were there, Chloe's gaze went to Whitney, almost as if seeking comfort or encouragement, and when she realized that she looked away from him immediately and cleared her throat as she turned her greens to Byron. "If we do this, there's no turning back."

"That's the whole point." Byron had made up his mind, and it seemed that there was nothing she could say that would change it.

Holding out her hand towards him, when Byron put his hand in hers Chloe clasped her fingers around his as her gaze went to Adam. "Are you ready?"

"Are you?" He countered.

She didn't answer, merely led Byron towards the Avatar, that magnificent serpent within her. The blonde held her hand out, no fear within her, and why should she feel fear when that creature, that fearsome monster, was herself? With that realization she placed her free hand down on the creature's scales, her own eyes shifting reptilian as they met the Avatar's. "You are me." The Avatar's flashed, and Chloe flinched as knowledge passed through her, knowledge that there was still unclaimed magic inside of her. "So there's still some traces of John's and Francis' magics inside of me that haven't been fused with my own. That could cause some trouble." She breathed in. "Fine, it'll leave me a bit weaker, but I can't afford to have those magics running wild in me any longer." The Avatar's eyes flashed, and the girl cried out as pain wracked her body as all of the magics that had escaped unification inside of her were hunted out.

"Plants are one thing, but miasma?" Zod narrowed his eyes as he paced the passageway, tension making his body rigid, the Dragon keeping his voice low enough so that the human witches couldn't hear. "I was content to let you keep your theories to yourself until you came up with something more conclusive, but that annoying female is in there and I need you to start sharing because I am getting her out of there alive. What is going on, what is causing it, and how do I stop it long enough to get her out of there in one piece?"

Jor-El cleared his throat as he leaned closer, voice low. "I do not think there is anything you can do, Major."

"I do not want to hear that, Councilman." Major Zod's eyes narrowed, refusing to believe that. "I have many more arguments to be had with that female, so find me something that-."

"You do not seem to be understanding me," the older Dragon interrupted. "There is nothing you can do."

"If I can not do something, then who?"

The last surviving councilman turned towards the cavern with the miasma. "The girl in that room."

Zod frowned. "You're implying that she-."

"I am not implying anything." Jor-El took in a deep breath. "Those plants are half breeds, just as she is, and you said so herself, you saw them reacting and changing when the Luthor heir taunted her. Not only that, but this miasma appeared during a time during which she made herself vulnerable in the midst of turbulent-and apparent somewhat murderous-emotions. Even if those emotions aren't directed towards her I believe that those feelings were picked up on and, like with the plant, the miasma appeared as a defense."

Zod's frown darkened as he stared at Jor-El. "Defense? You say that she could be seriously hurt-if not worse!"

"By the effects of her not defending herself from the constant attacks from her bloodkin," Jor-El clarified. "She's perfectly safe inside of the barrier, and I am beginning to believe that even if she wasn't inside of her barrier she wouldn't be affected by the miasma-that it's a special hybrid, just like the plants." The older Dragon raised an eyebrow. "As they were never used, we do not understand what the true power or full extent of the purpose of Stones of Power and the Orb were."

Zod opened his mouth but then stopped and sniffed the air, a snarl rumbling in his throat and escaping his lips as he turned and sped down the tunnels, coming upon the Halfing and Salamander. "What are you two doing here?"

They stopped, a little surprised to see him, before the Halfling cleared his throat and stepped forwards. "Davis felt something, like he did before-and when he did in the past something always was happening with Chloe. And whatever he's sensing, it's coming from here."

Zod's eyes narrowed as they turned on the Salamander. "Is that so?"

The Salamander nodded. "What is going on?"

Zod didn't like this, didn't like or trust either of them, but the Salamander had sensed what was happening, and he might be able to find a way to use that in the future. "Come with me." He gave a huff, displeased as he turned and made his way back towards where the others were. "Chloe was in the middle of performing a binding spell on her youngest brother when it seems that something went wrong, and not only has a poisonous miasma appeared in the room they're conducting the spell in causing her to place a barrier around them, but two of her brothers' grievances are manifesting themselves against each other and the barrier. In short, they're unknowingly attacking her."

"What are you doing to help?" The Halfling wanted to know.

Zod clenched his fist. "According the Councilman there is nothing we can do, the miasma would kill us before we could even get to her."

A muscle ticked in his former competition's cheek. "We can't just sit back and do nothing!"

The Salamander's voice was soft but determined. "I don't think sitting back and doing nothing is something the Major would do."

Zod eyed him curiously and nodded. "I have only just been made aware of the issue myself. A plan needs to be formulated."

"We're Dragons-," the Halfling started.

"You're only a Halfling." Zod couldn't stop himself.

"And Davey is a Salamander," the Halfling continued as if he hadn't spoken. "Shouldn't that mean we can take more than the others? Just how poisonous can this miasma thing be?"

Zod raised an eyebrow at him. "This miasma isn't normal. It would kill us before we could take two steps inside that chamber."

"Do you see that?" Zatanna frowned as she eyed the electrified walls. "They're wavering. Whatever's powering them is weakening."

"Yeah, I've noticed that." Greg licked his and took in a deep breath as he moved towards the wall, scarred hand held up.

Cassie caught his wrist and yanked it back before he could place his hand on the wall. "What are you doing? What part of that being electric are you not getting? You're going to hurt yourself!"

Greg stared down at her, expression serious. "It's weaker, and I can take the pain."

She tightened her grip on his hand as she shook her head. "No. I'm not going to let you hurt yourself!"

"We need to figure out what's going on and what we can do to not only get out of here, but help the others." Greg stared down at her. "To do that, I need to See things clearly."

Cassie kept her grip on him.

Faye stood and brushed off the back of her skirt. "Cassie-Byron, Chloe and the others are out there! I don't know about you, but I'm getting sick of being stuck in this box!"

Cassie sent Faye a look before her blues returned to Greg and she took in a deep breath as she let go of his wrist. "Just, please, be careful."

He gave her a crooked smile. "Where's the fun in that?" The Darkseid Cyclops placed the palm with his symbol on the electric wall, the Darkseid symbol appearing on his forehead as he grunted, features scrunching up.

...

Chloe cried as she held onto her arm, eyes widening as swirling icicles seemed to twirl their way up her arm, leaving a thin coat of ice over her like a second skin.

Byron was on a heap on the ground.

"Through my connection with her I can feel her magic flickering." Adam stood on one of Chloe's sides, eyes wide.

"It's not stopping." Whitney had his hand on Chloe's frozen arm and was whispering incantations desperately, his eyes widening in horror as the ice rose up her shoulder and downwards towards her chest. "Whatever happened whenever she got in between those two spells-!"

"This is your doing!" Mikhail snarled to Pete, eyes darkening, the pupils seeming to dilate. "This is why you came, isn't it? I wondered why you'd suddenly give a damn about what was going on with us and now I know why!" His eyes were nearly black. "You're here to kill her and take over as First!"

Pete shook his head as he stepped forwards. "You know what? I am sick and tired of hearing this crap from you. You know what I think? I think this is all your doing. Have we found out who the Third is? Because I have a feeling it's you and this is your way of getting rid of both of us so you can take over!" There was something dark and vicious that Greg had never seen in Pete before. "What can you really expect from someone who was raised by John Balcoin?" Pete's own eyes began to grow darker as he moved closer. "But I'm not going to let you hurt her, let you touch her. I mightn't be living in the same house as her, or want to be in the same Circle, but Chloe is my sister and my friend and I will not let some monster like you hurt her." Those pupils trembled before they bled out. "Stop whatever you're doing to her, or I'll make you."

Mikhail sneered. "I thought Chloe said your Balcoin dark magic wasn't active. I see there were many things about you she didn't know." He clenched his fists. "Doesn't matter if you have your dark magic or not, whether you're the Secondborn or not, I'll still prove to everyone who you really are." Mini tornados appeared all around him. "Stop whatever you're doing to her right now and reverse it, and I'll let you live, for her, because for some crazy reason she loves you."

Pete chuckled darkly, ice crawling up his clenched fists. "I was just about to tell you the exact same thing."

Mikhail snarled. "So we're going to have to do this the hard way then."

Pete growled. "It would seem so."

Simultaneously, they yelled out curses, air and ice racing towards each other, and the second they clashed violently, Chloe screamed in agony.

...

Greg yanked his hand away and stumbled back a couple of steps, eyes widened in horror. "Those idiots!"

"What is it?" Zatanna narrowed her eyes. "What did you see?"

"Is Byron okay?" That was, of course, Faye's first concern.

Cassie had other concerns. "Is Chloe alright?"

Greg turned to Cassie and shook his head. "No, and if we don't get out of here and warn them, Pete and Mikhail are going to...!"

"Well, what are we waiting on then?" Faye turned and aimed her palm towards the wall.

Greg's eyes widened and he grabbed her wrist, yanking her away before she could cast a spell. "Don't cast any spell damn it! That's Chloe! You'll hurt her more than she already is!"

"She's hurt?" Cassie stepped frowards.

Greg nodded as he let go of Faye. "We need to find a way out of here without casting a spell."

"How exactly do we do that?" Faye rubbed her wrist. "And why did she lock us up to begin with?"

"I don't know," he answered to both questions.

Zatanna eyed the barrier thoughtfully before she went to it and cleared her throat. The witch licked her lips as she placed her hand on the barrier... and her hand went through the barrier... the rest of her body stumbling through unharmed.

Faye's eyes widened. "You're telling me this is an illusion?!" And yet when she stormed towards the barrier she hit it, hard, and got a sharp shock for her trouble. The brunette stumbled back, eyes wide. "The hell?!"

Zatanna took in a deep breath as she eyed them through the barrier. "I'm not just Circle-bound, I'm bound to her by blood." She took a step back. "In the Draconian ways, when the Dragons dies, their Bloodbonded servents are supposed to be by their sides, and if the Dragon wishes it, they are to die as well. It's one of the reasons why it's so terrifying to be bound to a Dragon."

Greg stepped forwards. "Wait, you're saying-."

"I'm saying she's vulnerable enough that her magic acknowledged the fact that I have the right to be with her right now, so it let me through." Zatanna took another step backwards. "Tell me everything you can remember about what you Saw, and if you have any idea how I can get to her let me know that too. But do it quickly." Zatanna gulped. "I need to get there before what you Saw happens."

She couldn't feel her fingers.

Chloe wiggled her hands discreetly and pressed her nails into the meat of her fingertips, and yet she couldn't feel any of it. There was just a numbing chill that had started from her fingertips and seemed to crawl up her fingers and hands, slowly making its way up her arms. She had no idea what was going on, but she needed this unification of the magics inside of her to be over with so that she could do this spell and get out of here before she lost all of the sensation in her body-not that she thought she'd lose sensation in her legs. No, her legs were trembling, as if her muscles were caught in some sort of miniature storm.

The Avatar narrowed its eyes at her, those reptilian orbs going from Pete to Mikhail and then back to her.

Oh, she knew that this was a result of getting in between their spells, but she didn't see what good it would do to tell everyone about the situation right now. What they needed to do was to help Byron. He was their number one concern.

"Are you sure that you should be doing this now? Right before this ritual?" Whitney stood next to her, his hand on the small of her back, her Sanguine having joined her side when she'd cried out in pain earlier on and not having left. "You're only making yourself weaker."

"It's almost done." Chloe licked her lips. "Do you realize just how long have I put off doing this?"

"That's exactly my point, actually. Having some rogue powers inside you hasn't hurt you so far, so why can't it wait-." Whitney's words jumbled in his throat when Chloe turned towards him and rested her forehead against his chest. "A-are you okay?"

Chloe nodded, a headache beginning to set in. "I'm fine. Just a little tired. But that was to be expected."

"Once you began the binding." Adam wasn't helping her. "If you're tired before you actually begin the binding process itself-."

Chloe raised her gaze at him, eyes narrowed. "I'm fine."

"Are you sure?" It was Byron who asked, his face scrunched in worry. "If you got hurt because of me I'd never forgive myself."

Chloe pulled away from Whitney and went to her little brother, linking her arms around his neck and resting her head against his cheek a little tiredly, wondering if they felt cold too. "I'm fine, By." She smiled as her youngest brother hugged her tightly. "Stop worrying, Whitney is enough of a worrywart and nag for everyone."

"I take offense to that," Whitney raised an eyebrow, shucking his hands into his pockets.

She merely smiled at him. "It's a free country. You can do whatever you like."

The Sanguine snorted in dark amusement. "You keep saying that, but I have yet to see that that's true."

She frowned. "What do you mean?"

Whitney didn't think she was some sort of slave driver, did he?

But she didn't get to press her issue because suddenly something snapped inside of her, both in her solar plexus and her head, and the girl cried as her knees buckled under her. It was only thanks to Byron's quick reflexes that she didn't hit the ground.

"That's it!" Byron picked her up bridal style. "We're going back!"

"I'm fine. I have handled way worse pain than that-compared to joining with each cave that was pure joy." Chloe hated the fact that her voice was a whimper as she held onto her head. "I think... I think it's done."

"Are you sure?" Mikhail came closer and stared down into her face doubtfully. "You're very pale."

She made a face at him. "I'm sure."

"If Chloe says she's sure, she's sure." Pete was, as always, on her side, supportive, which was something she'd always loved about him.

"Thank you, Pete." The blonde girl sent him a smile as she eased out of Byron's arms and back to the ground. "Okay Byron, let's do this."

Byron eyed her, worried. "Are you okay?"

She frowned and eyed him just as intently as he eyed her. "Are you having second thoughts about the ritual?" She latched onto that rapidly, not too happy about the binding. "Because if that's what's going on here then we'll-."

"No." Byron shook his head. "I want to do this. Nothing will change that." He cleared his throat. "But I don't want to selfishly do anything that'll put you in danger."

Smiling tenderly at her baby brother, Chloe pushed up on her tiptoes and pressed a kiss to his cheek. "I'm fine. The more we argue this over the more time we'll waste and the more tired I'll be. So the best thing for us is to do the ritual."

Byron nodded and took in a deep breath. "Okay, I'm ready whenever you are."

Chloe reached for his hand and squeezed it. "Let's do this." Adam sent her a worried look, which she ignored as she moved back towards the Avatar and placed her hand palm-forward towards it, her Balcoin symbol beginning to glow molten against her skin. A hiss escaped her lips as she fought the urge to close her fist, feeling her eyes shift as her Darkseid symbol appeared on her forehead.

Adam's hands clasped the back of her and Byron's necks, the older boy acting both as an anchor and a conduit for her magic.

"Umbra et lux, nocte ac die, et monstrum est homo, ligaveris in unum." Chloe fought the flinch as magic erupted inside of her as she began the latin incantation that introduced her brother in this spell, alluding to his double persona by mentioning light and dark, day and night, monster and man, and as well as her intention to join those dual sides into one. She didn't like talking about him like that but it was how she had to for this spell. "Praepollens Sanguinem, Primogenitus Familiae, Magistra Dominae..." Her chest hurt somewhat, the coldness growing and spreading as she introduced herself in this spell and announced her right to bind Byron by declaring that she was the strongest of her bloodline, the Firstborn of her family, and the female leader. The blonde pushed back her own discomfort and tightened her grip on Byron's hand as chains of light, shadows and blood appeared, interlocking their wrists. "Nexum ad voluntatem meam Byron Balcoin, frater meus." As she commanded her brother to be bound to her, Chloe paused for a second, surprised to feel that awareness even here. But she pushed it out of the way and continued on with the spell. "Ipse est oportunus, ipse est volens, ipse est meus." She proclaimed him ready, willing, and hers.

Magic rumbled around her visibly, and although Chloe knew she should be concentrating, should be trying to remember the words she had only just memorized, she could feel herself drifting.

He could feel it, could feel her, and knew that the last restraints were breaking, were falling apart.

How long had he been waiting for this day to come? And at long last he'd be free once more.

Despite the fact that he faced the window, his eyes were closed, his lips tilted upwards in a smile as he flexed his fingers, feeling the first barrier already beginning to crumble.
