"Get inside!" Jonathan Kent urged the group as the ground exploded around them, a group of around a hundred of Darkseid's army having found them, attacking them viciously.

"There's too many of them," Lana announced, looking around. "We're not going to get deep inside enough. Not all of us."

Byron frowned, stepping forwards before flinging his palms out, sending the first couple of soldiers flying. "Get as many inside as possible!" He got hit with a curse, the boy flying to the ground, his arm sliced, his blood seeping into the earth.

Beneath him, beneath them all, the Balcoin symbol began to glow brighter.

John's Echo sat up in the Crystal Caves, the SOS clear as it transmitted from the Bleeding Caves. It was their first transmission since they'd shut down due to Chloe's renouncing her position as Balcoin Firstborn. The Bleeding Caves, much like everything else Balcoin, were weakening, slowly dying due to the fact that Chloe had chosen to denounce her ties to the Balcoin side of her magic and instead chose the Darkseid. It was why the Caves had shut down, powering down to try and store up the energy within, waiting for the right moment to use it. The Crystal Caves were running on a very low frequency and had powered up enough to generate the Echo once it had received the SOS.

Balcoin blood was being spilled, the Balcoin lineage was close to being extinguished.

The Firstborn couldn't renounce her position, couldn't just hand that responsibility to someone else, no matter what she'd been told. Because of it all, Balcoin magic was slowly beginning to die and the Bleeding Caves were crying out.

The Echo looked up as the Crystal Caves joined in the wail.

Somewhere deep within the earth, the Genesis Caves heard the cries of its sister Caves and began to awaken, the Balcoin symbol blazing in the darkness.

It wasn't working.

The Enthrallment wasn't working.

Chloe could feel the magic at her lips and yet it fizzled before it could even get past, the blonde confused as she kissed him harder, trying to force the Enthrallment past her open lips and yet nothing happened. Her mind worked a million thoughts per second, trying to come up with something – maybe a plan B, C, D, E for Christ's sakes! There had to be a reason this wasn't working! There had to be something that was blocking – Blocking! Greg had said something was blocking her magic! But what was it? She had to figure out what it was! Maybe the Major knew. Maybe she could get him to let it slip. Maybe she could-

He slipped a hand between them, his fingers claw-like as the dress ripped, the Major kissing her deeper as he slipped his hand under her thigh.

Chloe whimpered, clutching at his shoulders, her mind going blank as her body trembled when suddenly she coughed, tearing her lips from his, body shaking as a ticklish feeling crept up her throat and then she watched in horror as a blood-soaked butterfly clawed out of her mouth.

On the other hand, he grinned a savage smile, reaching out a finger, watching the dainty creature as it moved from her lip to his finger. "A harbinger."

Chloe shivered in disgust that that thing had come out of her mouth, having for the first time been awake when it had happened. "Get rid of it already, before it becomes one of those things."

He turned to look down at her in confusion. "Why would I do that?"

Chloe frowned up at him. "That's it. You were right. I'm not playing with a boy, I'm not even playing with a man. I'm playing with a Dragon and I don't know the rules to this game." She pushed him off, a feat made easier than it should be considering one of his hands was raised with the butterfly perched on it, the Dragon in human form tumbling off of her and onto the ground as the girl hurried towards the door. She didn't make it, instead magic slamming her back into the wall.

He picked himself off of the ground, fixing his clothes as he moved towards her, straightening his hair. "I must admit, I'm confused as to your sudden change in game plan. I thought you were going to show me something which, according to you, I've always been curious about."

"I changed my mind, women do that." She licked her lips, seeing the Balcoin symbol blaring viciously behind him. "Anyway, you mentioned tearing one too many times; you're partially to blame."

"Female Dragons do this too you know," he informed her with a raised eyebrow, hands clasped behind his back. "It is called Scale Display."

Scale Display.

He couldn't be serious.

There was no way that that was an actual thing.

Chloe eyed him, realizing he was serious.

Dear god, he was serious.

Was that the Dragon equivalent of being a cocktease or something?

The girl took in a deep breath, reminding herself that that wasn't important right now. "Look, it's not you, really, it isn't. It's to the point that it's bothering me because, while you look human, I know deep inside you're a huge lizard. And that should bother me more than it did when we were on that bed together two seconds ago." She pointed at the bed accusingly before clearing her throat and lowering the digit. "Not only that, but you and your people are real dicks. I haven't met one of you guys that I don't want to punch." She reminded herself that she was trying not to offend the guy and tried once more, licking her lips. "Anyway… I can appreciate the fact that you're angry at Rao, I'm angry at him, but I'm not staying here. Neither are my sisters or my friends. I don't know how I'm doing it, but we're all leaving. Today."

"And how do you plan on doing that?" he asked her.

She frowned. "I don't know," she repeated. The girl stepped forwards. "But what I do know is that my friends and family back home need me and that means I have to, no matter what." She clenched her fists tightly, her right fist burning slightly. "Even if I'm not the Balcoin Firstborn anymore, even if they're not mine to protect anymore, I'll be damned if I just sit here and let anything happen to them, especially when I chose to leave them to protect them from him." Chloe met his blues with her greens, realizing something at that moment and letting out a little chuckle. "Thank you."

He tilted his head slightly, eyeing her curiously. "I'm intrigued as to why you'd see fit to thank me."

"Because ranting to you, I just realized the most important realization I'll ever have," Chloe whispered. "Being a Darkseid makes me no less Balcoin. In fact, I'm just as much Balcoin as I am Darkseid, if notmore." She gave a little smile, wiping at the tears in her eyes. "I'm Chloe Balcoin-Darkseid. I'm the child of two Circles. Not one." She looked up at the silent Dragon staring at her. "Just because I have to accept the Darkseid in me, doesn't mean I have to reject the Balcoin. It's a part of me. And he knows that." Chloe began to tremble as her eyes widened. "Messing with my memories – renouncing my Balcoin – he's killing the Balcoin in me." Chloe's eyes filled with tears as her hand went to her mouth, her gaze going to the Balcoin symbol flashing desperately on the walls. "Why am I still seeing this? Why are the Caves collapsed? Why did the Book of Shadows burn when Pete tried to read it?"

The truth was right in front of her but she couldn't believe it, wouldn't.

The Major sighed, folding his hands over his chest as he eyed her. "Of course Rao would have you kill off any connection to magic you would have from another faction other than his own. Militarily speaking, he could not consider you a true ally if your loyalty was so obviously divided. And he needs you to be completely on his side for his plans to succeed, he needs you to have no other allegiance but to him."

Chloe's gaze rose to the Balcoin symbol and suddenly screams erupted from it, the girl covering her ears as the sounds pierced the air. She felt immense power, a connection to three Caves, something she'd never experienced before. The Genesis Caves. They were awake, they were powering this connection and sending the cries of the Crystal and Bleeding Caves to her, images of the attacks at the Bleeding Caves (along with data from John's Echo) downloading into Chloe's mind almost like a computer. And then the screaming was gone, the images were gone, the connection gone, and Chloe found herself lying on the floor, hands to her ears, from which blood pooled out.

The Major was unconscious on the ground, blood pooling from his ears as well.

The butterfly lay dead on the ground.

Chloe's eyes widened as the information she'd received left her reeling, the blonde wiping at the blood with her hands.

She was still the Balcoin Firstborn and because of the fact that she had renounced her Balcoin magic, was rejecting that side of her, she was slowly yet surely killing everyone's magic.

Horrified, furious, the blonde blinked and disappeared from the bedroom.

The further they travelled into the mountains, the more dead wolves they came across. It was a massacre; some of the wolves had been injured and tracked down, mercilessly killed. It was made sure that they had died, nothing left to chance. It wasn't a poaching thing because the fur hadn't been touched. These animals had been killed and left to rot, their bodies abandoned where slaughtered. It was a horrible, brutal sight.

"What do you think happened here?" Davis finally asked as they continued walking, the night cold, their breath visible.

"I don't know." Jason had an idea, but he just didn't know.

-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v

They'd somehow managed to get those without magic inside of the Caves. Those with magic were slowly retreating inside but had sustained multiple injuries and were gaining more and more as they retreated. Darkseid's troops were vicious and bloodthirsty, pushing forwards, getting closer and closer to the mouth of the cave, sending curse after curse at the group huddled inside. The tunnels were blocked by rocks, keeping the group from getting any further.

"We're going to die in here," Nathan's mother cried into his shirt.

"You brought us here to die!" one of the men snapped.

"Shut up!" Van snapped at him. "If we came here, it was for a reason."

"You brought us here!" One of the people pointed a finger at him.

"You're probably working with them!"

"You're one of them!"

"We're going to die!"

"I don't want to die!"

"Pete?" Lana cried, sitting on the ground, pressing her hand to his wound, looking up at a pale Clark. "He's bleeding badly. We need to get him to the hospital!"

The cave shook with the force of the curse that hit it, pebbles falling at the opening.

"They're going to bury us alive!"

"We need to get out!"

"We should never have come!"

"EVERYONE, SHUT UP!" Byron snapped, his voice surprising gravel, quieting the people as he turned towards the mouth of the cave. "They haven't come in after us."

"He's right." Lucas stood, eyes wide before narrowing. "Why haven't they come in after us?"

The two boys shared a look before they started towards the entrance of the cave.

-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v -v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v-v

Chloe gave a stuttering laugh as she stood in front of the Bleeding Caves, the ground singed, a circle of fire surrounding her. Despite the fact that she was standing here, home, she couldn't believe it; she was here. She really was. A part of her stopped rejoicing, knowing it had meant leaving the others behind, and knowing what it meant getting them back and free from the Shadow Realm before they were found and hurt. Also, staring at the army of men and women wearing Omega symbols helped to melt the smile from her face as she raised her chin defiantly at them.

"Hello." She was a little self conscious of the rip in her dress, which went all the way up to her upper thigh, but she ignored that, eyeing the soldiers. "Turn around and leave."

Most of them recognized her, she could tell that from their expressions of confusion. She mightn't have been the most social during her stay with Rao but people knew her face.

"We had orders, My Lady," one of the soldiers announced. "And those orders said that we don't return until the last Balcoin dies."

She clenched her fists. "Leave now and I swear I will take the fall for the failure to meet these orders. I swear, as Rao Darkseid's daughter, that if you leave now, not only will you leave with your life, but that I will take full responsibility in his eyes." She leveled her greens on them. "But if you insist on attacking the people in these caves, you will have to face my wrath, and then his when you don't fulfill your mission."

A couple of the soldiers paused, moving away, bowing out of the fight. "We take your promise that there will be no repercussions. We do not wish to fight you."

Chloe nodded. "Thank you."

"We do not wish to fight you either," the much larger group announced. "But we are faithful and Our Lord told us not to return until Balcoin blood was spilt this night."

"I'm sorry you feel that way," she responded, hearing her name yelled behind her, turning her head to see Lucas and Byron rushing towards the mouth of the cave. "Stay." Immediately, a visible barrier came down in front of the entrance to the cave, keeping the boys from coming out. Chloe closed her eyes as, with that one word, she could feel her body connecting completely with the Bleeding Caves once more, and through their connection, with the Crystal Caves as well. It was like a power rush. With her eyes closed, it was almost as if she could see the lights coming on inside of the tunnels of the caves, as if a generator had turned on inside.

The girl concentrated on the Bleeding Caves, which had deteriorated the worse out of the two sets of Caves during her absence.

The sigils all came alive at once, shining brightly on the tunnel walls as the rocks which had been blocking the tunnels disappeared, melting into the floors or rolled back up into the ceiling where they'd fallen from. Portions that had completely collapsed rebuilt themselves, stronger than before. Magic, which had seemed completely gone, thrived within each and every particle of dust within the cave system as it grew.

The people inside watched in stricken awe as the body of the tunnel they were in changed completely, expanding from a suffocating dark and tiny vein into a large magnificent one, its sigils glowing, its walls thrumming with life, almost with a heartbeat. There seemed to be light coming from somewhere but they couldn't tell from where, the group staring around them in confusion, going towards where Lucas and Byron leaned against the translucent wall keeping them safely inside of the cave.

Chloe could feel the Crystal Caves purring to life as well, lighting up, fully awake once more but running on the least amount of energy they could.

She couldn't feel the Genesis Cave anymore but that didn't matter.

Not right now.

The ground shifted beneath her feet, the air crackling with magic, warning bells sounding throughout her whole body.

The blonde opened her eyes, finding multiple curses flying towards her simultaneously, the soldiers having taken advantage of her distraction to launch simultaneous attacks on her while her eyes were closed. But the second Chloe's eyes opened, the curses stopped. The curses, all visible colors, hovered in the air around her like missile projectiles, frozen in place before fizzling out into nothingness.

There was silence; the soldiers who'd stood down, whispering to each other.

The soldiers who hadn't, who'd attacked, narrowed their eyes in shock before one of them attacked again and it seemed to stir the others, the group reacting in a frenzy.

Chloe closed her eyes, feeling deep within her. This trip to the Shadow Realm (and connecting with the three Caves) had opened her eyes in such a way… The girl felt the first curse hit her, burning; another hit, slicing. She ignored them, searching deep within her. She blocked the pain even as one particular blow sent her stumbling back a couple of steps.

How could she not have felt it before? These two forces within her? The battling? The constant war?

She needed to learn to be more in tune with herself than this, but for now… for now, this was her first step to trying to repair the damage her ignorance had created.

Just as more curses flew in, the witches drawing physically close, Chloe made sure her back was fully turned to the cave as she opened her eyes once more.

The soldiers once more stumbled to a halt.

Chloe lifted her hands to her cheeks, feeling the ridges of scales running along her cheekbones before her gaze went to the witch army in front of her and she smirked. "I need to make sure you leave some alive."

"How many exactly?" her reflection asked, Scales appearing from the shadows on her left wearing a tight golden snakeskin catsuit, her hair up in a ponytail. "Or do you only want an approximate?"

"And do they need all their limbs intact?" another voice asked as another of her mirror images appeared, Chloe seeing this one for the first time. This version of her had a black bob and wore an almost indecently short black tutu skirt, combat boots and a black corset shirt. "You knew about me."

Chloe eyed the physical manifestation of her Darkseid magic, or at least the humanoid version of her. "I only found out about you so I decided to introduce myself."

A small smile of pleasure tilted the dark girl's lips before she cleared her throat, looking away towards the witches. "What you're asking us to do is unorthodox. It goes against the rules."

"You'll find, Claws, that she doesn't usually stick to the rules." Scales eyed the soldiers, who probably hadn't yet attacked out of pure confusion. "I tried at first to get her to, but I found it makes her interesting."

Chloe shared a smile with her Balcoin magic manifestation. "I didn't know I making you weaker by renouncing my Balcoin side."

"I know." Scales nodded. "And I wasn't allowed to tell you." She shrugged. "Rules."

Claws stared between the two of them before clearing her throat loudly. "Armed enemies right in front of us, no time for bonding."

Scales rolled her eyes before turning her gaze back to Chloe. "I'll accept if she accepts."

Claws eyed Scales before pursing her lips, eyeing Chloe and then Scales again before stomping her foot into the ground. "Fine. I accept. But not because I don't think I couldn't have taken you out because, let's face it, you might have had extra powers combined in you, but I'm a Dragon and you're a Wyvern. You'd never be a real threat."

"Oh, yeah?" Scales made a face. "Well guess what? I'm the accumulation of three different highly powerful Wyvern magics combined. Guess what, Dragon? I'm just as powerful as you are." She smirked. "And I haven't fully integrated the other magics into me yet."

The girls snarled at each other, Scales' eyes going reptile while Claws' bled inky black.

"Girls, please, you're both hardcore," Chloe interrupted before her two magics could get into yet another fight, turning their attention towards the true battle at hand. "Right now, we have something elsewe're supposed to be doing, don't we?"

The girls gave each other one last snarl before turning their gazes towards the army of witches watching them, each having something to prove.

"I don't know what the fuck is going on," one of the witches snarled, "but this is it. We're done playing games. Even if you are the Master's daughter."

"Yeah." Another stepped forwards. "We ain't gonna be easy on youse no mores."

"Or your twin sisters?" another announced slowly, clearly confused as to what the hell was going on.

"Did she have sisters?" one of them asked another.

"Who the hell cares?" the one he'd asked snarled, stepping forwards. "They've betrayed Our Lord by trying to stop us from doing His work and, for that, they will die along with these traitors!"

"GIVE THEM SLOW DEATHS!" someone screamed before they charged, curses being thrown.

And that was when the fighting really began.

I'm glad that Chloe finally realized she was killing Scales and the caves. Will Scales and Claws be keeping score on how many minions they kill because they kind of remind me of Legolas and Gimli the way they bicker.
14th-Sep-2013 01:03 am (UTC)
They probably will! And the one who got the most probably won't let the other forget that they got less!

Scales and Claws!!!
I love it!

Glad that Chloe is taking charge... Rao will be so pissed!

Who is Major? I don't have a clear picture of him in my head... all I know is that he's hot! :)

He won't be jumping for joy, that's for sure.

He *is* hot... but wont say *who* he is yet!

Wait a minute... the Major wouldn't happen to to look like a certain Conrad "Duke" Hauser now, would he? :)

While I don't want to give away identities I can tell you that the person will be someone from either Smallville or Secret Circle, no other fandom :p
