Written for my LiveJournal Paranormal25 150 Prompt Table. Prompt of the day # 11: Radiant Boy

"And so I decided to make my way here and see what she was talking about," John Winchester's voice announced as Chloe and Dean entered through the front door. She'd ordered Dante to go around letting the others in the garden know that John Winchester was here and what that meant, and all she had to worry about right now were Ben, Dax and Zilvinas, who were in the house already. But when she entered she found no trace of Ben, the ghost disappeared, and Dax wasn't in sight either.

In fact, Lois and Sam were standing there with Bobby and John, their expressions grim, but the wink Lois sent Chloe assured her that they'd heard John coming and had managed to send the charges into hiding before he entered.

She let out a breath of relief and was able to not be so horribly tense when his gaze shifted towards her and Dean as the front door closed behind them.

"Dad." Dean acknowledged his father's presence. "It's good to see you're alive."

"What's with the tone?" John Winchester questioned his eldest, no hint of a smile. "This wouldn't be the first time I needed some space for a hunt."

"Is that what this was?" Sam glared at him. "We left you messages for weeks, you could've answered one at least, even if just to tell us to stop calling you."

"I was busy, Samuel." He gazed landed on Chloe. "You must be the girl I heard about. Bobby's girl."

Chloe froze, tense. "You've-heard-about me?"

"I don't think there isn't a hunter who hasn't heard about you by now." John snorted. "You staked Gordon Walker. He was trying to use the story to gain some support but mostly all he got was ridicule." He moved towards Chloe and held out his hand, not seeming to note the dark looks on the faces of the men at the mention of the incident. "John Winchester, you've got the makings of a fine hunter in you, the instinct is obviously there."

Oh, that was so not true, but Chloe held out her hand nonetheless and shook his. "Chloe."

"So dad, what are you doing here?" Dean wanted to know. "Did you come to see us or did you need something from Bobby?" How he said it, it was obvious that Dean believed it to be the later.

"Neither, I was with someone I knew when I overheard her talking on the phone to someone else about me and something I should know." John eyed the boys curiously. "The person didn't know I was listening and said she didn't think it would be a good idea if I came to Bobby's and knew what was going on. I remembered one of your messages saying that you were going to stay at Bobby's for a while so of course I made an excuse to leave and started driving here immediately." He gazed at everyone. "So someone want to tell me what the hell I wasn't supposed to know about?"

"Nothing's happening here." Bobby's answer was gruff and immediate. "Whoever your source was, was wrong."

"My source is never wrong, and the fact that she didn't want me to know about whatever is going on here, at least 'not now' when she's always been so upfront about everything..." John's eyes narrowed in dark suspicion. "Just what the hell is everyone trying to keep from me?"

Chloe's eyes widened as she gazed around her, horrified, seeing everyone's faces and that they had nothing to say. John was smart, he would figure it out. She needed to give him a lead or he'd be relentless. "I'm pregnant."

Bobby choked on his saliva.

Dean and Sam didn't look that much better off as they stared at her with wide eyes.

John blinked, visibly confused as he stared at Bobby and then at her. "Uh, I suppose I should say 'congratulations', but I don't see what that could do with me or why-." His eyes widened as he looked between Sam and Dean, clearly gobsmacked. "Which one of my idiot sons is the father?"

Chloe opened her mouth.

"I am." Sam and Dean said at the same time.

She closed her mouth and did her best to keep from covering her face in horror, as she really wanted to.

John stared between the two of them, eyes narrowed. "Just how are the both of you-?"

Sam cleared his throat. "We're… we're not sure who the father is… between the two of us."

"Won't matter either way, they'll still be Winchesters." Dean replied.

"They?" John made a face.

"It." Dean quickly corrected. "I just meant, you know, either way, if it was his or mine, they, it, he, she, would be Winchester."

"And I'm supposing that's what your friend knew about and didn't want you to know until we… uh… knew… who the father was." Sam ran his hand over his head.

John must've seen something in their faces (and Sam and Dean were better actors than the rest of them) because he suddenly went towards the sofa and collapsed on it heavily. "I can't believe you two gang banged Bobby's girl to the extent that you don't know who knocked her up!"

"Gang-!" Bobby, who was barely keeping himself together at this moment, sputtered at that. "Don't use that word and my daughter in the same sentence!"

John blinked as he looked up at Bobby. "How are they still alive? I figured you would've filled them with buckshots. If she was my daughter I would've done that if your sons had done this to her."

Thankfully Bobby knew she wasn't pregnant and this was a ploy to distract John, so he acted his way out of this one. "How am I going to explain that to the kid whenever it asks about what happened to its daddy?" He ran a hand over his face, obviously unable to believe that Chloe had gotten him into this situation. "Plus, if it's anything like it's mother, I'm going to need the help."

Chloe smirked at that last part, it sounded very genuine.

Lois, who'd been uncharacteristically silent throughout this whole situation, raised an eyebrow. "So, you're going to be a granddaddy. Mazeltov."

John stared at Lois, almost in horror, before he turned his gaze on Chloe. "How far along are you?"

"Not that far." Chloe placed her hand on her stomach instinctively. "I haven't had my first doctor's visit yet."

"What are you waiting on?" John wanted to know, eyes narrowed. "That's an important first step."

Chloe nodded. "It's planned."

"Don't plan. Do." He looked between Sam and Dean. "What are you two planning on doing about this? A kid will get in the way of our hunting, and your-studies-depending on who the father ends up being."

"I'm not asking anything from them." Chloe felt defensive. "If this kid is going to be such a burden I have no problem raising him or her alone with just my father's support."

"The hell you are!" Dean snapped.

"A father has rights too, you know." Sam glared at her. "You can't just decide something like that on your own!"

Chloe blinked, taken back. They were really good actors. She seriously could believe that what she'd said had pissed them off.

John took in a deep breath as he stood. "I am too tired to deal with this." He eyed Bobby. "What room is available for me to sleep off the drive here?"

Chloe suddenly hoped it wasn't one with a view to the back yard.

"Clara's old sewing room." Bobby responded.

Chloe relaxed since that room faced the front yard.

"I'm going to lay down." John turned to face his boys. "Grab my things from the truck and bring them to the room for me."

Obviously he wanted to continue talking to them in private.

The brothers shared a look before going to do as told.

Bobby waited until John had trudged upstairs before he turned on Chloe. "Pregnant? You couldn't think of a better excuse than that?"

"It worked, didn't it?" Chloe flushed hotly. "Now he'll be distracted by this and hopefully that will work in our favor."

Lois eyed them. "Can we just stop and appreciate the workaholic he is in the fact that his biggest issue with your pregnancy is that it'll give them less time to kill things?"

Dax appeared, teleporting around Chloe's neck with a chirp.

Chloe sighed and rubbed her cheek against the firelizard's head. "Daxy, you and the others are going to have to stay out of sight while that man is here."

"At least we told him we have a pet snake. Zilvinas looks normal so he's one we don't have to worry about." Lois saw the bright side. "We just need to keep him away from the back yard, and maybe keep Ben outside with the others until Daddy Winchester is gone."

"How the hell could you two be so stupid?" John snapped the second the door closed behind the boys. "You've knocked up Bobby's girl. Bobby's girl. You're lucky you're still alive."

"We know that." Dean dropped John's bag on the bed.

Sam dropped the one he was carrying on the floor. "If the only reason you called us up here was to yell at us I'm leaving, I have other things I need to do."

John took in a deep breath, trying to control himself. "What are you two planning on doing about this situation?"

The boys shared confused, uneasy looks.

Dean cleared his throat as he turned to look at him. "Not much we can really do until the birth so we can do the tests needed to figure out who the father is."

John tensed. "So it's been decided that she's going to keep that child?"

His sons froze.

Sam shook his head at him. "Jesus dad, I can't believe you just asked that."

"There was never any other discussion." Dean's voice was final.

John couldn't believe his boys were being so stupid. "You are both young, as is that girl. You have your lives ahead of you. We're not in the middle ages. Keeping the child isn't something that you have to do. It isn't a sin to consider alternatives."

"No one said it was a sin or wrong." Sam glared at him. "We're just saying that that isn't an option for us. We want this."

"Just think for a second!" John snapped at them. "Think about the girl for crying out loud! She's not ready to be a mother, and neither of you two numbskulls are ready to be fathers either." He shook his head. "You both have things you have to do, commitments you have to complete-and the life of a hunter-it's no place to be raising a child. You both know that better than anyone else."

"I'm leaving." Sam moved towards the door.

"Think about your mother." John's words stopped him. "You don't know what killed her-what killed your roommate in the same way she died. Haven't you wondered if maybe you're just putting this girl and this child in unnecessary danger?"

Sam turned to face his father. "Now that you bring that up, how about you finally start telling us what the hell is going on?"

John hesitated. "You are a civilian, you don't need-."

Sam laughed darkly. "So you're telling me that I should convince Chloe to abort my baby because of this threat, but when I want clarification on it I can't find out more because I'm a civilian?" He sneered. "You're pathetic, dad."

John snarled as he stepped forwards. "Don't talk to me like that, like it or not, I'm still your father!"

"Yeah, like it or not." Sam opened the door, stormed out, and slammed it shut behind him.

John shook his head, unable to believe that his youngest hadn't gotten any smarter during his time in Stanford. He turned to Dean, who had always been more understanding and reasonable. "You have to see how rational my reasoning is."

"I do." Dean nodded, voice soft, face emotionless. "Doesn't mean I have to agree with it."

John narrowed his eyes. "You're not father material, Dean. You're a hunter."

"And you can't be both, right, dad?" Dean shook his head as he moved towards the door, fingers curled around the handle. "I'm sorry to disappoint you with this, sir, but you're just going to have to get used to the idea of being a grandfather, because nothing you're going to say is going to convince Sam or I." And with that he was gone.

John stared at the door in shock as he sat down hard on his bed.

Even Dean had turned on him.

Just what the world was going on here?

John took in a deep breath.

Well, if he couldn't convince the boys to do the smart thing, he was going to have to convince the girl.

Her butt was vibrating.

Lois blinked as she looked around her in confusion as she sat alone in the dark living room long after everyone else had retired to sleep, the girl watching Sex In the City reruns when suddenly her butt had started to vibrate, and at first she'd thought it was her imagination, but then she'd realized that there was no way she was imagining it. That was when she'd gone couch diving and had found a phone she didn't recognize in between the cushions, her eyes widening when she realized that when John was sitting there earlier his phone must've fallen out of his pockets. There were a couple of missed calls, this seemed urgent, and she figured this might have to do with a hunt-which meant she could wake him up and give him an excuse to leave them immediately-so Lois lowered the volume of the television and answered the phone as she got comfortable once more on the sofa.

"John Winchester's phone."

There was a pause, and then a young male voice cleared itself and spoke: "Uh, I, uh, can I speak to him please?"

"Is it urgent and hunter related?" She asked, very hopeful that it was so.

"Hunter-?" He cleared his throat. "Uh, no. I'm, uh, I'm his son, and I wanted to-."

She snorted. "Listen, I know all about the hunting of the supernatural that John's so obsessed with, so you don't have to be all weird and pretend to be some make-believe third son that John doesn't have, because John only has two sons, and Sam and Dean are sleeping upstairs." She looked at her nails. "So how about you cut the crap and just tell me who you really are, what you want John to kill, and I'll wake up him so he can do that for you?"

"I-uh-. You know what? It wasn't that urgent. Don't even tell him I called." And with that he hung up.

Lois snorted. "How rude." She threw the phone on the sofa and looked up when she saw movement on the stairs, getting up when she saw Chloe and Dante. "Hey Lil Cuz, what's up?"

Chloe brought a finger to her lips and motioned for Lois to follow them silently.

Intrigued, Lois forgot all about the caller as she got up and hurried after them out of the house. The night breeze was cold and she hugged herself as she looked around her, confused as to what was going on and where they were going, but then she began to feel something weird. "What is that?"

Chloe pointed up wordlessly to the sky.

Lois didn't look up, she instead looked at her cousin and wondered when Chloe was going to realize that at certain times she literally glowed.

Chloe eyed her in amused intrigue before she pointed with more force towards the sky.

Lois shook her head before she looked up at the sky and her eyes widened when she saw the orange hew. "What the hell?"

Dante stopped from where he was in the lead and turned to face them, eyes relaying the message for them to hurry up.

Chloe grinned as she grabbed Lois' hand and together they followed the Hellhound deep into the field to the side of of the house.

Lois watched as the sky seemed to shift and move, almost as if alive, as if a mass of fire.

What the hell was going on?

Lois opened her mouth to speak but Chloe covered her mouth, the silent girl staring up at the sky, expectant.

Realizing that Chloe hadn't said a thing since she'd come down, Lois decided to take a cue from her cousin's actions and remained mute despite the many questions she wanted to ask. Lois merely paid attention to the sky above her, to the rolling of the fire, and it was after a couple of minutes of intent staring that she realized what she was looking at.

She was looking at birds.

The birds' feathers glowed so brightly in the dark that they lit up the night like fire as they broke away from the mass and began to dance in spirals, dipping down before swooping back up, dancing.

Chloe jumped slightly before she looked down.

Lois noticed Ben there, his hand in Chloe's as he looked up at the sky, eyes wide.

Now that Lois paid attention to someplace that wasn't the sky, she could see that the muscaliets and fairies were around as well, watching the event with obvious awe and fascination.

Dante sat down and looked up at the sky.

Dax teleported on top of Chloe's head and got comfortable there.

The blonde reached into her pocket and pulled out a note, handing it to Lois.

With the dancing, glowing birds above them, Lois could read the writing from The Powers That Be.

Greetings Lighthouse

We of the Council apologize for the short notice in which we deliver this message, but we have only just discovered the tidings ourselves.

You will be receiving tonight the remnants of the Hercinia, a very rare species of bird that we have been fearing was nearing extinction as, despite their long lifespan, they have not gone into mating cycle in a hundred years. Our own various efforts to encourage breeding in an attempt to save the species have continuously failed us, and yet we were informed by those watching over the different flocks hidden around the world that they were showing signs of entering into a courtship stage and taking flight. The flocks, despite the part of the world they have been hidden in, were all headed towards your sanctuary, and we are of the belief that they will be making your sanctuary their breeding ground.

Enjoy the mating dance of the Hercinia, it is a beautiful and very rare sight, and is the promise of salvation of this species.

The Council

Lois looked up at the sky. Hercinia, huh?

She smiled and hugged herself as she stared up at the sky and watched the courtship dances of the Hercinia.

It moved in the darkness of the woods surrounding the property, able to see the light shining from the Lighthouse even from this distance. Its footsteps were light, silent like the night as it cast a gaze upwards and narrowed its gaze to see the Hercinia in mating dance, swirling and twirling in mid-air, plunging down before swooping up into the air in gracefully coordinated moves, leaving trails of fiery light behind them.

Those eyes then went to the newest body it'd found at the mouth of the barrier, this one closer to full disintegration than the others. It bent to get a better look at the body before it gazed ahead of it at the invisible barrier, and then at the mushrooms that formed a line around the border of the sanctuary. Its head tilted to the side as it contemplated, as it calculated how many bodies it'd come across while trailing the borders of the sanctuary, trying to find a weakness in the barrier and so far finding none.

Pushing up it eyed the direction of the pulsating light, almost tempted to try its luck, but knew better than to do anything tonight.

It had to bide its time and wait for the right moment.

With that decided it slinked back into the shadows and disappeared from sight.
